Help a girl out

Rhetorical question: When you think back to your early dating years, do you:

a. smile
b. laugh
c. groan
d. cringe
e. all of the above

Rob and I are going to be speaking about "dating" to a group of 16 and 17 year-olds next Wednesday. I think we have a pretty good plan in the works, but I would LOVE a little help from you:

Would you be so kind to tell me about a favorite "fun" date that you went on in high school or even college. Please note that I am not interested in the most romantic date you have ever been on (remember this is for 16 and 17 yr-old kids. Hopefully they won't be experiencing their most "romantic" date until they are well into their 20s...).

It would be easy for me to do an internet search and find a list of "fun" or "creative" dating ideas, but I want REAL ideas/examples that you have actually experienced (an e-mail is fine if you aren't comfortable posting a comment). Thanks!

For part of our presentation, I plan on showing these funny photos of what Rob and I looked like back in the spring of 1991. This was Rob, just before prom (look out ladies):

This is me "pretending" to be picking out a dress for the prom (this photo was taken for a local magazine). I didn't really go to the Prom that year as it was 3 weeks before my 16th birthday, and the guy I really liked had a girlfriend anyway... (is anyone else sooo glad to be where they are today instead of 16 again?!)

Hmmm. I never really got asked out. Sorry. ; ) I did go on one group date in college where each couple was given a letter of the alphabet and a five dollar limit with which to purchase their picnic dinner-- everything beginning with that letter. Creativity was strongly encouraged and determined the winner. It was fun, but I can't say that I was a fan of the Braunschweiger with Blue corn tortilla chips that my date and I picked for the main part of our 'b' meal.

Have fun teaching the class! You'll do great!

One of the funnest dates I went on isn't really recommended for 16/17 year olds. We went to a local car dealership and test drove cars. Let's just say when the car salesman realized we were only 16 he was not thrilled.

Hmmm so something doable - we bought a ton of helium balloons and poster board and drove around to random people's homes and wrote on the posters things like "smile - we love you" or something specific to that person (many of the people were parents of our friends) and we left the posters and balloons at the door a la ding dong ditch.

Picnics at the park with a group of friends were always fun too. And roller skating - a group of us went - hadn't roller skated in YEARS but it was like being 8 again - but this time I got to hold the hand of the boy I liked.

Those pictures KILL me! How funny! You and Rob are going to be so great for this talk!

When I was 16 and Adam was 18, he took me to the drive-in on a double date with some friends of ours in his truck and had filled the bed of the truck with all kinds of pillows and blankets and set the speakers up so they would project into the back. It was a big truck so we all just squished back there and watched the movies under the stars. It was so fun, and very memorable! But I don't know if you want to encourage drive-ins (or if there are even any out there anymore!). But we were such innocent teens, we stayed well out of trouble! :)

I also remember a lot of hikes we took together. It's a fun way to get out, get active, and talk a lot, getting to know each other better.

I was super shy (I know, shock) in high school, so I didn't date much, but did go on the occasional group date. My favorites included anything sport-like (ping-pong, basketball, tennis, hiking, swimming, etc.), which alot of girls might not like. I think you should do the things you enjoy and then you'll find people who have similar interests.

Maybe you should suggest that they go on an entire date without texting, talking on their phone, basically no electronics and see if they can do it. I know that's been a big concern in our stake that the youth don't know how to interact face to face.

Sorry, I'm worthless on the creativity end.

I'm really, REALLY glad I don't have to relive that time of my life. I was Not Popular, but somehow was deluded enough to think that, once I turned 16, guys would just start calling. Ha! My dad took me out on my birthday (to see Chariots of Fire), and then it was 4 months before my first real date. Any other dates I went on at that age I was the one doing the asking, and they were usually for big dances, nothing creative.

I'm trying to recall that time of my life. We actually did a lot of fun creative dates in high school. One fun one was we took the bus downtown and toured the city like tourists. That was really fun and there's always interesting people on the bus. We also did a sound scavenger hunt where we each had a tape recorder and had to record different sounds. We went horseback riding once which was really fun but may be a bit pricey. Sledding was always fun but I'm sure you can't do that there. It was also always fun to go to a campsite and cook dinner there. Good luck!

Love the picture of Rob, David had a similar hair style and I think the same glasses, it is cracking me up. I grew up with a lot of boys around (6 brothers and all their friends) and we played a lot of games outside. Old games like kick the can, it is some of most favorite memories. I also liked when we attempted to cook dinner, we would just talk and hang out. There was also a fair amount of boxing but I would not recommend that for a date.

I always loved dates when we were outside. Frisbee golf, rock climbing, roller blading. Of course though I did love going to sporting events also. Just be yourself. Playing video games. Not taking it to serously. The best decision I did was decided not to have a serious boyfriend till after high school. I just enjoyed hanging out a bunch of different people.

Love the photos! You will do such a great job. Date ideas: once we made a snow cave & ate dinner inside (a little difficult there, but something similar...like a tent?), boating/played the candybar game at the dam, hmmm...I can't remember anything else creative. Was it really that long ago? It seems like an obvious saying, but I think the old, "you marry who you date" is so true. Good luck!
