FAQ's

Are there certain questions that you are frequently asked? Besides the obvious "what's for dinner?" and "when will we get there?" type of questions that I hear regularly, another question stands out as one that I hear quite often: "Are you going to keep trying until you get a girl?" I probably hear this even more than the "you sure have your hands full" variety of statements. I was very interested in an e-mail that my sister-in-law sent me this week. A link to a story claiming to have discovered a new contributor to determining baby gender http://http//news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080424/ap_on_he_me/diet_baby_gender

In a nutshell the article suggests that a mother's diet may influence gender, and in particular that a woman who eats cold cereal and bananas prior to getting pregnant is more likely to have a boy! Well now we know! Have I mentioned that cold cereal and bananas are two huge staples in our house? Cold cereal is usually "dessert" for our kids instead of other treats (they will honestly pick this over ice cream most of the time). My favorite part of the article was the following:

"Women who had boys also ate about 400 calories more daily than those who had girls, on average...Still, no one's recommending pigging out if you really want a boy or starving yourself if you'd prefer a girl."

I couldn't help feeling a bit defensive when reading this even though I thought it was hilarious(yah, I know that I like to eat). Don't worry, I won't be doing anything drastic (or foolish) in hopes of getting a girl someday...although I wouldn't mind hearing the (not-so-frequent) question, "Have you lost weight?"

So sorry to General Mills, Kelloggs, Post, Dole, Chiquita and the other companies we are helping keep in business; I may be cutting back in a year or so...

p.s. What I want to know is why do we keep planning vacations during the NBA playoffs (I can only handle so much basketball and opted to sit here at this laptop instead of watching with Rob)? Someone please remind me of this next year...

Glad you enjoyed the article! I thought of the gazillion boxes of cereal in your basement as I read. I'm sure the boys can make it through it all without you.

Tamsen-
You may not remember me, I met you once or twice. I came across your blog because I blog with Trisha and Andi. I was friends with Dan, Tate and Rob all of our college years. I hope you don't mind me commenting on your blog.

I just had to comment on this funny post. I have 3 girls and I get the opposite of that question all the time. I also saw a news blip about the cereal thing and I thought that was hilarious. Has science been wrong all this time? It's not really the man that determines the sex? I can't believe all this time it's really just been about cereal and bananas determining the sex of the baby! HA!

Anyway, you are welcome to check out my blog... I'm at davis-spot.blogspot.com.

I've kept in touch with Dan and Tate but I'm sorry I lost touch with you guys. I'm glad I ran across your blog. Say Hi to Rob!

Maybe it is Rob you should withhold the cereal from! You should start now just to make sure it increases your chances!

I don't know what I ate before I got pregnant with Adri, but I know the only thing I did crave when I was pregnant with her was rice crispies and banana smoothies. Who knows?

Good luck with the rest of your vacation. Sorry about the playoffs...but happy for us to hear from you! Take care, cutie!

I guess that's why I ended up with a girl? I haven't been a big fan of cold cereal since my college days.

Sounds like a great vacation. Hanging out in the hotel room watching the NBA finals. I'd rather have a root canal... (and I like sports). Definitely schedule that on your calendar for next year. NBA Finals- NO VACATION ALLOWED! :)
